ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER

AS THE ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER (ASM), YOU WILL ASSIST THE SM DURING THE REHEARSAL PERIODS WITH DUTIES AS ASSIGNED. SM UTILIZE ASMS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS.  SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES ALSO DEPEND ON THE NEEDS OF THE SHOW.  

THE ASM TYPICALLY FUNCTIONS AS ONE OF TWO ASMS BACKSTAGE DURING THE TECH REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES, PROMOTES SAFETY BACKSTAGE, COORDINATES PROP AND SCENE SHIFTS. REHEARSAL DUTIES VARY.

During tech week and performances, by accepting this role you are confirming you have
NO absences during this time. 
If you will be absent during any of those times, please do not accept the position for this show.


Once you have signed on to the show

  • Read the script (if you haven’t already) and discuss what aspects of the show the SM envisions for ASMs to assist with or manage. 

  • Attend Production meetings as needed.

  • Accept SharePoint access from TIP staff.  SharePoint is the only file share product that can be used due to county IT restrictions.

  • Complete Volunteer with Stipend paperwork in a timely manner

Some duties may include:

  • Assist with the coordination the audition/callback process as needed by the directing team.

  • Assist with the taping of the set and maintenance of rehearsal space.

  • Assist with noting the movements of props, shifts and costume changes.

  • Assist Properties Master with set-up of prop tables (in rehearsal and in the performance space).

  • Assist Costume Crew with change areas and changes as needed.

  • Assist with spiking of furniture and set pieces.

  • Learn the mechanics of all scene shifts.

  • Manage Running Crew.

  • Assign shift responsibilities to the props/shift crew.

  • Supervise pre-show checks for each rehearsal and performance.

  • Help maintain order backstage with people and all show elements.

  • Observe and note any potential problems or hazards backstage and report them to the SM immediately.

  • Serve as check-in point when actors are called to places.

  • Assist with orchestra/band set up/tear down as determined by SM and conductor.

  • Assist with shifts as needed and communicate with SM.

  • Check the dressing rooms each evening to ensure they are cleaned and restocked – alert SM of any needs or damages.

  • Assist SM with post rehearsal/performance responsibilities.

  • Complete post show survey to provide feedback.
